Recreation Programming Audit

Recreation is where belonging is felt. Audit your calendar and programs for wording and structures that assume traditional family, binary gender, or straight relationships.

Calendar wording

• Replace "family day" with "bring someone who matters to you."
• Replace "husband/wife" references with "partner" or "spouse."
• Check that events do not assume a resident’s gender or relationship.

Program content

• Music, films, and readings include 2SLGBTQI+ voices and stories, not only traditional fare.
• Discussion groups are facilitated so homophobic or transphobic comments are gently redirected.
• Outings and events are open to chosen family on the same footing as legal family.

Participation

• Watch who never attends — isolation can signal they do not feel safe.
• Offer private ways to access 2SLGBTQI+ resources for residents not comfortable being seen.
• Ask residents what they would enjoy — do not assume from age or appearance.
